Thomas's Story
Thomas's family visited Ben's Retreat in April 2025.

In February 2024 we noticed that our son, Thomas, who was 8 at the time, started speaking much more slowly than usual. This along with some other changes in his behaviour led us to being sent to our local hospital for checks.
After an initial CT scan found a mass in his brain. Thomas was moved to Southampton hospital for an MRI and later a biopsy.
We were told that Thomas had an aggressive high grade brain tumour which was inoperable due to the location and incurable.
We were told he could have radiotherapy to give him more time but ultimately we should do nice things with him while we still could.
He underwent 30 rounds of radiotherapy and 3 cycles of chemotherapy and the brain tumour seemed to remain stable.
But another MRI in September found that the cancer had spread down his brain stem and spine and there were now no more options for treatment and he was moved to palliative care.
He passed away peacefully at home with us by his side on 16th November 2024.
He was 9 years old.
Thomas was so wonderful to be around, he was funny, caring and so brave throughout his illness. It’s such a cruel disease, he lost so much of himself but he was always smiling. We miss him so much.
We are grateful for the break away to spend some time healing as a family.
