Seren's Story

Seren's family visited the Cotswolds in November 2025.

Seren was 14 when she noticed a lump on her neck whilst doing up her school shirt collar in December 2024.

After ultrasounds and biopsies Seren was diognosed with thyroid cancer. This totally floored us all. She was a healthy girl with no symptoms and this came completely out of the blue.

9 weeks after finding the lump in February 2025 Seren had a total thyroidectomy and the tumour was removed.

The surgery was done at Bristol Children's hospital and their care was amazing.

Unfortunately though during the surgery Seren lost 3 out of 4 of her parathyroid glands which produce the hormones that control the amount of calcium in the blood.

Seren woke up the day after surgery with pins and needles in her hands, feet face, and lips. Doctors appeared from everywhere and it was a scary time while they regulated her calcium levels.

After a 5 night hospital stay we were home with daily medication to replace the thyroid hormones and also medication to control her calcium. We had to return to the hospital for daily blood tests for a few months until they had her calcium regulated.

Seren returned to school after just a few weeks but then we heard that that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes.

In April we travelled to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London for Radio Active Iodine treatment. The treatment went well but Seren had to be separated from us for just over a week while she was radio active.
The treatment killed the remaining cancer cells and thankfully Seren is now in remission.

Through her many blood tests Seren was also diagnosed with Coelic disease. It's the least of her problems but still something else she has to think about. She'll be on daily medication for the rest of her life but apart from that she's doing really well.

It's been a whirlwind year. Seren has been so brave, positive and resilient throughout it all. She has been so accepting of what has happened to her and has been so supportive of her siblings feelings too.

She's absolutely amazing and we're so so proud of her.
Thank you so much for this amazing break. We've been really looking forward to it xxx
